Do I have to join straight away?

The first night is free after that it is only £2.50 per evening. If you then do then decide to join you can switch to the subscription membership which is £30 for the year. £10 of this goes towards ECF (English Chess Federation) membership.

Do I have to play competitive matches?

Not unless you want to. The club has four teams in the leicestershire league which regularly play other clubs in the league. You may be asked to play but you don't have to unless you are ready and want to.

Do I need my own board and clock?

The club is well stocked with clocks and boards which we keep down at the social club so there is no need to buy any equipment. However If you do decide that you would like a clock and board for home then Cyril has a number available at very reasonable prices.

Do I need to be a really good player?

You may be an experienced player of simply someone that knows how the pieces move, it does not matter. The club has a players of many different levels of ability and you can choose who to play while you develop your game. Cyril is an experienced coach who can help you improve and develop your game.

Will I be the only female player at the club?

No you won't. Syston chess club is one of the few if not the only chess club in the county which has active female players.
